Google Ads update

If you have had a browse through my website, or any of my social media channels, you will have seen that I am a Google Ads Consultant. I have been for quite a number of years and it's something that I sort of fell into.

Having worked in London for some of the world's largest advertising agencies around the turn of the millennium, I was fortunate to be headhunted to work at the only internet focus advertising agency in the world... i-level plc. To get an idea of where we were positioned in the market, check out this article: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2008/may/01/digitalmedia.mediabusiness

So, I got to see behind the digital curtain at the height of the explosion of internet advertising, and have kept my beady eyes on it ever since.

So what has that got to do with now? Well, back in the day businesses used to pay for 'impressions' (I will do my Billy Connolly for you one day if you're lucky, but that is not what I mean), which was just how many times your ad appeared on a screen. Within a few years, people realised that impressions was just like burning money as it gave very little ROI. Fine, you were being seen, but was anyone actually engaging with the ad?

And so the CPC model was evolved!! Cost Per Click!

Now people had a way of measuring who was interested in the adverts and it was actually generating traffic through to their websites. This is when Google got their shit together and this is one of the main reasons why Google is the force it is today.

I have a number of Google Ads clients now that I manage their ad accounts for. One thing that is quite neat about this is that they don't always need my services all of the time. Some of my customers are seasonal businesses (CHRISTMAS!!) so they spend big for 3 months and then pause everything for the rest of the year. Google's algorithm that learns what ad layouts gain the most attention just sits there waiting. You don't lose anything, it doesn't forget. So the next year, I can unclick the pause button and carry on from where we left off!

Recently, Google updated their Data Retention Policy and now will hold the information generated within a campaign for... 11 years!!

I'm not so sure why they have gone all the way up to 11...

maybe they are a fan of Spinal Tap?
