Websites that waste time

Let’s be honest, we’re all guilty of it. We open our browsers with grand intentions of tackling that mountain of emails, researching groundbreaking new ideas, or maybe even finally learning to code in a language that isn’t just “human speech with extra emojis.” But then, poof! Hours disappear into the ether of delightful, utterly unproductive internet rabbit holes. And you know what? It’s perfectly, gloriously, magnificently okay!

Because sometimes, the internet isn’t about crushing your to-do list; it’s about the sheer, whimsical joy of discovering something truly unique, something that makes you chuckle and perhaps even ponder the delightful madness of human creativity. And that, my friends, brings us to the utterly charming, delightfully quirky, and strangely addictive digital masterpiece over at The Pudding’s “Songs in the Key of Time”.

Imagine a clock, but not just any clock. This isn’t your grandma’s dusty cuckoo clock, nor is it that sleek, minimalist digital display you splurged on. Oh no. This clock tells time using songs. Yes, you read that right. Every minute, if there’s a song in its massive database whose title happens to contain the current time (like “5:00” or “6:47 From Central Station”), it’ll play a snippet of it. It’s like a musical scavenger hunt for the present moment, a gloriously inefficient yet utterly captivating way to watch the minutes tick by.

It’s the kind of internet creation that reminds us that the web isn’t just a productivity machine or a news ticker. It’s a vast playground for the imagination, a place where someone can dedicate their time to cataloging nearly 9,000 songs from the Spotify API, just so a clock can sing you the time. If that isn’t peak internet fun, I don’t know what is!

But here’s the kicker, and this is where the “fun and games” meet the serious “work and dedication.” While we’re happily losing track of time to a symphony of time-telling tunes, we can’t help but marvel at the sheer effort that must have gone into this project. Think about it:

  • Data, Data Everywhere: Sifting through the Spotify API for 8,968 songs with time-specific titles? That’s not a casual afternoon stroll; that’s a digital marathon!

  • The Brains Behind the Beats: Crafting the code to not only find these songs but also to intelligently play them, avoiding incorrect AM/PM snafus, and making sure the whole thing runs smoothly? That takes some serious coding chops and a whole lot of problem-solving.

  • The Visionary: Hats off to Russell Samora, the brilliant mind who cooked up this delightfully bonkers idea. Turning a simple concept into a fully functional, publicly accessible website requires a blend of creativity and technical prowess.

So, the next time you find yourself feeling guilty about “wasting time” online, remember this musical time-teller. It’s a beautiful testament to the fact that the internet is a place for innovation, silliness, and sometimes, a perfect blend of both. It’s proof that a tremendous amount of work can go into something designed purely for our amusement, making those delightful detours from productivity totally worth it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time for “9 to 5″… or maybe “Time After Time.”
