And so it’s time to learn new skills… again!  

I actively decided to drop web design from my list of services because I made no money from them and finding people that didn’t already have them was few and far between.

When Mr Creator was first set up in 2010, it was me (Jim) on graphics and admin, with Martin Colton on Website and Sales… but due to family demands Martin left Mr Creator in 2012.  We had already built up a portfolio of websites on a platform called ‘Moonfruit’ (do YOU have any memory of this platform?). Moonfruit basically used Flash as the tech to build the sites as it was much more user friendly than having to deal with HTML code… that is until Flash was dropped due to it’s apparent limitations.

So… Moonfruit got bought out by Yell and Yell decided to ‘port’ all if the sites over to WIX!  This porting process was actually a complete nightmare as I effectively had to rebuild all of the sites from scratch again. I also had to relearn how to put the sites together and even got to learn about the back end SEO/Google Ads/SERP stuff connected to WIX.  Yell still owned the sites but WIX provided the platform and hosting… all whilst honouring the Moonfruit contract prices.

So I was still not making anything from websites but at least I wasn’t actually out of pocket.

Until last month.

Yell decided that it was no longer supplementing the Moonfruit contract and it was ditching me, hook line and stinker into the choppy and costly seas of WIX. Again I would have to have the sites ported over and now it was going to cost me almost half of my monthly Moonfruit fee… but now it’s PER SITE!!

WHAAAAATTTT???

So… it now leaves me with no choice but to  look at other options and take the fate of my website journey into my own hands.  So now the hosting is with whomever I choose and although I am not saving any money going forward, at least I have no more surprises around the corner and I am not beholden to WIX. I can now build the sites and if a client wants to take them away and host them themselves, then they can!

I mean… my costs still have gone through the roof, but at least I am in control.
